RE: Development and
Institutionalization of Department Disaster
Preparedness Program
All
departments of surgery must have a disaster preparedness program to be able to
effectively and efficiently handle any form of disaster that they may be called
to manage at any time.
As
of this writing, the Department of Surgery of Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center
(OMMC Surgery) has no structured and written disaster preparedness program.
Starting
May, 2003, OMMC Surgery will have a structured and written disaster
preparedness program.
1.
An
OMMC Surgery Disaster Preparedness Program will be developed and presented in one
of the regular Thursday Conferences within the month of May, 2003.
2.
An
OMMC Surgery Disaster Preparedness Drill (simulated disaster drill) will be
conducted within the month of May, 2003, to kick off the institutionalization
of the program. Thereafter, every year,
within the month of February to March, using a regular Thursday conference as
the venue, there will be a simulated disaster drill. The February- March timing is chosen for several reasons:
coinciding with Fire Prevention Month, Burn Awareness Month, start of the year,
new surgical residents, new disaster control director, etc.
3.
The
OMMC Surgery Disaster Preparedness Program will be posted in the OMMC Surgery
website, egroup, and Educational Resource.
4.
This
year, OMMC Surgery Disaster Control Director will be Dr. Alex Deveza.
This
program is the first of its kind in a department of surgery in the Philippines
– another project making the OMMC Surgery truly a model department of surgery
in the Philippines.
